About

Dr. Johanne-Bryce Hodgson is an Award Winning*, Neurodiverse, Disabled, Trans and Queer, Experimental Contemporary Composer with a focus on Chance and Indeterminate compositional processes, and an emphasis on play.

As of Summer 2025 she has completed her PhD tiled Chance and Indeterminacy from a Neurodiverse Composers’ Perspective at Canterbury Christ Church University’s within the School of Music and Performing Arts, which is situated within the Creative Arts department.

Her previous projects have involved; A Rubiks Cube, Sweets, Theatre, Improvisation, an Atari, a Pi, a Box, Dice (of various shapes and descriptions), and a Dragon or two Dungeons & Dragon. While her Masters project involved exploring notation for circuit-bent toys, as well as how far one could go with removing or limiting the composer’s agency before a work is no longer a composition.

Influenced by first-hand experience at the lack of financial accessibility to the experimental world, Johanne is a great believer in the accessibility of resources, therefore any scores composed before the completion of her PhD (and some after) will be available either as a direct download, or at request. There are also discussions of some of the works and their process on this site.
